Was on my way to do some field work on Tuesday and this weather was coming in our direction.
My attempt at Bonsai did not kill the plant
I saw this lovely poui (Tabebuia rosea) while on my way to my friend's wedding. It's supposed to be pink but the colour was so pale it looked almost white. I was fortunate enough to get a picture while the car was driving by.
Recently I thought my Mgambo tree was dying. All the leaves just started to turn brown and fall off. But after a while I saw some new leaves coming out and that made me super happy. I pulled off the other dying leaves to give the new ones a chance.
This weekend was a packed one for the El Socorro Centre for Wildlife Conservation. On Friday and Sunday we attended the T&T Bioblitz where over the weekend biological surveying was done in an attempt to record all the living species within the area. The final count was 730 species. For this display we had some of… Continue reading Weekend Wildlife Activities
My discocactus is growing.
I am a tree. You will never be As tall as me. Up up up I go My branches swaying in the wind Just so I relish in the afternoon breeze As I listen to the buzz of the bees. Many animals make their home in me. The little bird, The snake, Wait a minute..… Continue reading I am a Tree
Sometimes it's nice to get away and take a hike through the forest. You get to witness nature at its best on these trails. If you're lucky you might even see some wildlife peeking out from behind a tree. And the great thing about it is that the trails usually lead to a nice beach,… Continue reading Take a Hike, Enjoy Nature
The other day I looked outside and saw this beautiful cloud formation so I thought I would share it.
I haven't posted about my Mgambo in a while so I thought I would share a photo. She's growing quite nicely. Lots of leaves there now. She has her first leaves still. They haven't fallen off yet.
I was told in work that all I talk about is animals and plants. Is it that I've spoken about them so much that people are tired of hearing about them instead of loving them more? That would be bad. That wasn't my intention. Maybe it is that I'm speaking to the wrong people. Need… Continue reading All I Ever Talk About
Meet Santiago. A cactus... He is green. He has no spines. I bought him at a pet store but they didn't know what he was. Santiago adds a little life to my desk at work. Beautiful isn't he?
So I decided to plant a lucky seed tree as well. Yellow oleander (Cascabela thevetia) is also known as lucky seed or lucky nut because the shape resembles a fortune cookie. It is also known as "be still plant" as all parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested. It comes in two varieties, yellow… Continue reading Lucky Seed (Cascabela thevetia)
I need to give my tree a name. She's been growing quite well over the past few days. Here are some photos of where she's at. Here she is when she sent out her first leaves. This was on the 4th September. The leaves got a little bigger by the 5th September … Continue reading My Mgambo Tree Journey: New Leaves
Since I decided to plant my Mgambo tree here in Trinidad, I have been looking for information about it all over the internet. There isn't very much out there but this is what I have learned. Botanical Name: Majidea zanguebarica or Majidea zangueberica (It appears both ways online.) The word Mgambo is Swahili for "announcement"… Continue reading A Little About Mgambo Trees (Majidea zanguebarica)
So... I decided to plant this tree that has beautiful black velvety seeds in pods that are red on the inside. After about 2 weeks sitting in the soil, my seed sent out his little radicle and began his journey to be a big tree. Stay tuned for more updates on this amazing journey!
